Movement Disorders We Help Treat

If someone is suffering from a movement disorder, there are a wide variety of different disorders they might have. As there are many kinds of movement disorders, there’s no one specific treatment that covers them all. Each patient is different, and the way their disorder affects them can differ as well. Dr. Dane strives to provide treatments that work best for each unique patient.

At Carolina Brain Center, we provide treatments for several different movement disorders, which include the following.

Tourette Syndrome

Symptoms of Tourette syndrome include not only repetitive movement tics but verbal ones as well. These symptoms can be minor ones that won’t interfere with a person’s life, such as blinking or nose twitching. However, severe symptoms of Tourette’s can make life much more difficult. Severe symptoms include hopping, twisting, repeating words, and saying inappropriate words and phrases.

Parkinson’s Disease and Parkinsonian Type Disorders

Having Parkinson’s can cause delayed movements, muscle stiffness, tremors, as well as speech problems. Symptoms of Parkinson’s typically affect one side of the body at the beginning. Although Parkinson’s may start gradually with minor symptoms, these will progress over time. Many movement disorders have similar symptoms to Parkinson’s that he can help treat.

Dystonia

Dystonia causes a person’s muscles to contract involuntarily, which can cause them to have repetitive or twisting movements. Muscles that are affected by dystonia may be in one area, two or more, or throughout the entire body. These movements not only make life difficult, but they can also be painful.

Cerebellar Degenerative Disorders

Cerebellar degenerative disorders can be brought on by damage to neurons in the cerebellum, or the area of the brain that controls muscle coordination and balance. Symptoms of cerebellar degenerative disorders include difficulty walking, slurred speech, tremors, and jerking movements in the arms and legs.

Tremors

Tremors can be the result of having a movement disorder or another type of condition. A person can have tremors that affect different body parts. Treatment for tremors requires us to determine the cause for them.

Our Approach to Movement Disorder Treatment

Finding the right treatment for a movement disorder can be difficult, especially when many still have no cure. Many also struggle to find a way to manage their symptoms because traditional treatments aren’t always effective. At Caroline Brain Center, we have a unique holistic treatment plan that utilizes both functional medicine and functional neurology. By starting with a detailed exam of each patient, we can get a better understanding of how to provide effective treatment for their movement disorder.

As a part of our treatment, our patients participate in a week-long intensive program called Brain Camp. Dedicating a week to this gives us the best and quickest way to increase brain function. For those with tight schedules, we can arrange something more flexible. In the end, we can gauge the progress made and determine the best way to continue treatment.

While receiving care in our office is invaluable, it isn’t the only aspect of our patients’ treatment. For some movement disorders, continued treatment is essential to help manage symptoms. This puts much responsibility on patients and anyone who might be in the position of caring for them. During the in-office treatment, we help prepare patients to continue their treatment in their own homes to give them the best chance at effectively managing their symptoms.
